You may have heard of popular TikTok food trends like Cowboy Caviar Ice Cream Fruit Rollups. Some may taste delicious and introduce fans to new food combinations, while others may make you vomit just thinking about them.
The latest food trend claims that eating it will make you feel healthy, if a little weirded out by the texture. Introducing ricotta and mustard!
This new fad is supposedly a key component to a TikTokers (@tiffanyymagee) weight loss journey. Eat this combo with nearly every meal, and I mean Everything is fine meal.
But is this interesting concoction really a nutritious way to help you shed a few pounds? Or is it just a strange combination to attract TikTok viewers?
What is the cottage cheese and mustard diet?
The cottage cheese and mustard diet is a combination that made Magee famous, as he used it as a dip for vegetables, fruit and chicken sausage.
For breakfast Magee has mustard and cottage cheese mixed with eggs and snack on fruit dipped in dressing. She also consumes an electrolyte drink with her meals.

What’s in cottage cheese that burns fat?
Cottage cheese itself does not burn fat. But it’s high in protein, with 25 grams per one-cup serving.
Fat is burned through exercise and moving your body. Period. For example, going for a walk, jog or bike ride.
Eating one food and doing nothing and sitting won’t burn much energy, said Carol Johnston, a nutrition professor at Arizona State University.
Moving your body improves cardiovascular health, reduces inflammation and stress, and, yes, it helps burn calories, which can lead to weight loss.
Johnston said consuming protein has a thermic effect, meaning your body’s metabolism runs a little higher to process the amino acids in protein. This would mean about 10-30 more calories consumed per protein-rich meal, compared to walking, which can burn about 150 calories every 30 minutes.
Is it okay to eat cottage cheese every day?
There’s nothing wrong with eating cottage cheese every day, Johnston said. Ricotta has an important nutritional value, as it provides calcium, B vitamins and is one of the best protein sources.
However, daily ricotta consumption should be done in moderation, she said. An appropriate serving of cottage cheese is half a cup.
Is the cottage and mustard diet healthy?
Cottage cheese isn’t a high-calorie food, and you can purchase lower-fat versions of it. Mustard has no calories. Many tiktokers consume the cheese and dressing with fruits and vegetables, which are also very low in calories.
In Magee’s daily diet, the only thing significant in terms of calories would be chicken sausage, and having only a portion of it is one way to manage calorie intake, Johnston said.
When asked if Magee’s diet seemed to produce weight-loss results, Johnston said that because she’s limiting high-calorie foods like fast food, processed foods and restaurant foods, which often have excess calories like fat and sugar, it’s likely that following his diet would in fact lead to weight loss for most people.
He emphasized that it is basically a whole food diet and includes all major food groups except grains. He recommends a little whole grain each day, he said it would be good to add something like whole grain crackers for added fiber.
Magee also consumes electrolytes with his meals, and Johnston said they’re good for you. It’s just important to make sure you don’t consume electrolyte-sweetened drinks like Gatorade. There are alternative electrolyte-rich waters that are sugar-free, which are better options.
Is the mustard ricotta diet bad for you?
Overall, this diet isn’t bad, although it can get a bit monotonous.
Johnston said you can eat all the food you want; you just need to reduce the portion size. Having one slice of pizza instead of four or having half a cup of pasta is a better alternative and allows you to enjoy the foods you want to consume.
Everyone needs to go to the kitchen and whip out a scoop and remind themselves what half a cup is, Johnston said. Because for most of our foods, with the exception of fruits and vegetables, a serving is closer to half a cup. With vegetables, the recommended portion is one cup.

What do ricotta and mustard taste like?
I conducted my own taste test of this popular trend and the results were interesting.
Looking at one of Magees most popular TikToks, I chose to buy similar ingredients from Trader Joes.
I purchased Chicken Apple Sausage, Carrots, Strawberries, Heart of Palm, Broccoli, Yellow Mustard and Cottage Cheese.
I cooked the sausages on the stove according to the directions on the back of the package. So I made my bowl to look just like hers, adding a huge amount of ricotta and mustard.
Upon first glance, this bowl was super colorful, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing. The real test would be how everything tastes together.
I first tried the sausage with only mustard, as Magee often does, and it was delicious, as expected. Sausage and mustard is a very common combination. I then dipped the sausage into the ricotta and mustard and honestly the ricotta wasn’t very noticeable.
I switched to the heart of palm, which I’ve never tried before. I tried it myself for the first time and immediately didn’t like it, it was too acidic and had a strange slimy texture. I tried it with mustard and ricotta and I have to admit it tasted better as the combination of mustard and ricotta hid the flavour.
Then there was the broccoli and it went well with the mustard and ricotta combo, nothing more shocking there.
I believe I liked the carrot better with it due to the crunchiness and hint of sweetness that comes from the veg itself.
I ate a bite of the strawberry and then dipped it in the mustard and cottage cheese. I discovered that I don’t like strawberries with ricotta and mustard. What a surprise.
Overall, this meal was a little better than expected. It felt more like having a snack than eating an actual meal. I went into it with low expectations and had some happy surprises.
However, after a stomach ache the next morning. I decided it would be my first and last time preparing a raw meal with mustard and cottage cheese. There are just better ways to eat a whole-foods diet, like cutting your veggies and roasting them, eating strawberries on their own, and keeping mustard pairings on the savory side.
If anything this meal left me craving some nice warm bread with butter or a big bowl of pasta. Skipping grains is not for me. What about mustard on fruit? I’d rather not.
