On Tuesday night, a spokeswoman for the Campbell Clinic identified the victim as Dr. Benjamin Mauck, adding that he was a “much respected and loved” doctor:

“Today, we witnessed a single shooter event within our Collierville clinic.

We are shocked and saddened to confirm that the accident resulted in the tragic loss of one of our much respected and loved physicians, Dr. Ben Mauck. We ask you to please lift up his family in prayer.

In this difficult time, we will work on many details and keep you updated as soon as possible.

We have decided to close all Campbell Clinic locations tomorrow July 12 and will announce the reopening of all facilities at a later date.

We appreciate our local law enforcement officers who responded within minutes. We will continue to work closely with authorities as this remains an active investigation.

Our priorities remain Faith, Family and Patient Care. At this time, we ask for your prayers for the entire Campbell Clinic family, as well as the privacy of Dr. Maucks’ family.”

According to an online biography, Mauck specialized in elbow, hand, and wrist surgery and joined the clinic’s staff in August 2012.

WATCH: One arrested after health worker was shot dead in Collierville, police say

When FOX13 arrived on the scene, a crowd of workers were being escorted out by police. Police cars were parked on each side of the building and detectives were flying drones around the parking lot.

“We’re in the northwest corner of the building. Room C2, C2, Charlie 2,” an officer was overheard saying on police scanner chatter posted by broadcastify.com. “We have a doctor down, two shots to the chest.”

Campbell Clinic workers approached their cars, some arm in arm, some crying and some just staring. As they left the building, officers entered with rifles. A place meant for healing had become the scene of a violent crime.

This appears to be a one-on-one interaction that occurred in an exam room, Lane said.

Detectives said the suspect had been at the clinic for hours before the shooting.

The suspect had a weapon in his possession, Lane said. It was on his person, not in his hands and was taken into custody without incident.

Lane said the suspect fled the clinic and was captured 5 minutes later near the entrance to the building. He described the investigation as in its early stages and intended to work with the ATF to trace the history of the suspect’s weapon.

As you can imagine, there were a lot of patients who were there and addicted, Lane said. There are a lot of interviews taking place, so we will be able to provide more information in the coming days.

The Campbell Clinic announced that all locations will be closed on Wednesday with the decision to reopen coming later. A spokeswoman asked for prayers for Maucks’ family, a sentiment echoed by Lane.

It’s bad, it’s awful, it’s awful, Lane said. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

The Collierville Police Department has not yet released the suspect’s name or detailed the charges he could face.

Police also emphasized that this was not an active shooter situation, like the mass shooting that occurred at Collierville Kroger, and that it was an isolated shooting incident.
