NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that its President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD has been named to The 2023 Power of Diversity: Pride 100 by City & State New York for his work advancing the rights of New York’s LGBTQ+ community . Ranked fifth on the list, Dr. Katz is recognized for leading the largest municipal health care system in the nation. Under his leadership, NYC Health + Hospitals has expanded services to address the unique health care needs and concerns of LGBTQ+ New Yorkers. The health care system has seven Pride Health Centers where patients receive high quality, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate care in a safe and welcoming environment. Services include primary care, behavioral health, HIV testing and treatment, and gender-affirming surgery at Metropolitan and Lincoln. All 18 eligible health care facilities + hospitals in New York City earned the Human Rights Campaign Foundations Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality designation last year, an accolade the health care system has received annually since 2015. To achieve this, facilities must train staff in LGBTQ+ health care, have LGBTQ+ responsive policies and make those policies available to the public and staff.
Long-term care facilities in health systems also participated in the inaugural Long-Term Care Equality Index (LEI) in 2021, a joint project of SAGE and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation designed to promote inclusive and equitable care for older LGBTQ+ adults in long-term care communities.

Dr. Katz was named President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals in January 2018. During this time, Dr. Katz has focused on advancing public health system transformation with several new initiatives to expand access to services primary care services, reduce administrative costs, invest in more frontline clinical staff and create financial stability. In September 2020, NYC Care, a health care access program for New Yorkers who are ineligible or unable to afford health insurance, went live citywide four months ahead of schedule under the leadership of Dr. Katz.
Dr. Katz’s initial transformational strategy helped lay the foundation for the public health system to combat the challenges of the unprecedented global health crisis, COVID-19. During the pandemic, the system was able to more than triple its critical care capacity, establish a dedicated COVID-19 hotline to help mitigate dangerous overcrowding in the system’s emergency departments, relocate nearly all care appointments existing outpatient clinic to telehealth and help establish the Citys Test & Trace Corps. The public health system is also now providing critical support to facilitate the City’s introduction of COVID-19 vaccines and boosters to those who are eligible.
